Top 4 Reasons Why Your Garage Door Is Not Working Properly

There can be a multitude of reasons why your garage door is not going up properly. Your garage door is subjected to daily wear and tear, which can negatively impact its performance. It might get stuck halfway through going up or shutting down or won’t open up or close at all. Problems like these can be frustrating, especially when there’s an emergency and you have to go out. Imagine running late for work, and your garage door refuses to open.

You might need to get your garage door repaired or replaced if it doesn’t open all the way. Contact professionals from the same company that manufactured and installed your garage to ensure they get the right specifications for a replacement door. They can confirm whether you need a complete replacement for the faulty door or if a simple repair will be enough to get it working again.

Read our post to find out more about some of the most common reasons why your garage door is not working properly.

Photo Eye Is Blocked

Most garage doors have a sensor that detects if an object or a person is blocking the door from completely closing or lowering all the way. This sensor is called a photo-eye, having an eye the size of a pea and is present about 4 to 6 inches off the ground for most garage doors. It works by shooting a light or laser beam across the garage’s length.

If the beam is interrupted, the signal used to lower and raise the door will cut off as well, and your door won’t work. If such a situation arises, you need to check if the wire attached to the photo-eye is cut or damaged and get it fixed.

A rainstorm or leak can damage the photo-eye sensor occasionally. Dust and dirt can also clog it and block the laser beam. Thorough cleaning with a soft cloth can sometimes solve this problem.

Power Source Is Disrupted

Sometimes, your garage door’s power source is unplugged, and you are unaware of it, so you are left to wonder why your door opener is not working. You need to ensure that your garage door opener is plugged into a working outlet.

Sometimes, electrical outlets can go out without warning, so you need to check if it is working by plugging some other electronic equipment into it. Be sure to check your fuse, main power switch, or circuit breaker and see if they are working properly or not.

Torsion Springs Are Broken

A snapping or booming sound from your garage could indicate that your garage door torsion spring has broken or snapped. It is a very loud noise that is very similar to a gunshot or a firecracker. These torsion springs have a certain number of cycles that they can complete and are usually the first to break among all your garage door assembly components.

Broken spring is typically the most common reason customers call for garage door repair companies. If you have a broken spring issue, you need to refrain from any attempts to open the door or fix the issue yourself, as it can be highly dangerous. You must leave its repair to a professional with the right tools and skills.

Door Sensitivity Needs Adjustment

This is most common for a newly installed garage door, but it can also occur in an older one. Your garage door will not open if its sensitivity level is set too low or too high. To reset the sensitivity, read the doors manufacturer manual for directions first. Adjusting the limit switch and close force to the correct levels will enable your door to work properly.
