How To Prepare Your Storage Shed For Winter

While it may not feel like fall yet, Canada’s snowy weather is not far off, and as the temperatures around the country drop and the seasons start to change, outdoor summer supplies need to be packed up and safely put away, while items such as sleds, snow shovels, and ice scrapers need to come out of storage and be within reach.

Portable storage sheds provide extra space and protection for materials that can’t find a room in your house/property. They’re quick and easy to install, durable, cost-effective, and can practically be placed anywhere around your property where you require storage. But these structures are often at risk during certain times of the year, such as during harsh winters.

While the shed’s quality and material play an essential role in keeping them sturdy all year long, here is how you can make sure your storage shed has added protection this winter and does not rust or rot under the snow.

Inspect The Shed

With sufficient care of these storage structures, they can last for a long time. The first thing you need to do to prepare your shed for the upcoming winter is to examine it properly. Follow the steps below to review and inspect your shed’s operating condition.

  • Diagnose and fix any structural faults. Inspect the roof, floor, walls, windows and doors for any cracks and gaps. Seal the cracks and holes with caulk to stop moisture or pests from getting in.
  • Check if the shed’s roof is correctly fitted. It should be tight and perfectly fitted to reduce the risk of snow or rain water coming in.
  • Check if the shed’s roof is free of debris and examine if the shed is clean inside and out. If not make sure to clean it properly.

Give It A Thorough Cleaning

To control unwanted mould or dust from taking over your shed in the winter, do a thorough cleaning before the cold season arrives. Follow these steps to clean and organize your shed properly.

  • Take all the materials out of the shed.
  • Give it a thorough clean/wash. Make sure to keep its wooden floors and doors dry.
  • Apply fresh paint. This will increase its durability and longevity.
  • Categorize your tools and add shelves and cabinets for better organization.
  • Avoid using abrasive and harsh materials to clean the surfaces as the chemicals can harm the structure.

While arranging materials, make sure to pack all summer tools properly. Items such as fertilizers and mulch or power tools should properly be closed and covered with a tarp to protect them from moisture and dust.

Assess And Clear Your Landscape

Once you have inspected and cleaned your storage property thoroughly, it is time to assess its surroundings.

  • If you have trees in your backyard with damaged trunks or weak branches that might snap over your shed during the winter, it is better to prune or trim them down now.
  • Rake leaves, and keep the shed’s entrance shovelled for easy access to your winter supplies. Make sure to remove any autumn leaves and snow from the shed’s roof as well.
  • Inspect the drains and gutters of the storage building and keep it clear of leaves. If you don’t already have drains, consider installing them so that water from the melting snow can smoothly run away from the shed’s surface.
